Parents should never discourage their kids from playing sports, but recently there has been a problem of coaches and parents pushing the children too far – to the point of breaking down physically and emotionally.

Injuries are only a part of the problem; youth sports are straying further from its mission of providing healthy, safe, and character-building recreation for children. A parent’s or coach’s goal of a child achieving college scholarships or making Olympic teams are the main reason behind the child’s sport becoming all-consuming and causing injuries that are compromising children’s futures.

The main reason behind the increase of sports injuries is the emphasis of playing sports all year long, which leaves little time for the body to recover. The pediatrics council recommends never playing through the pain, ignoring it is just going to make it worse.
